Using satellites that orbit the earth, Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers provide a persons location, accurate to within a few meters. Many receivers translate the location onto a map and can track the travelers movements, showing distance, speed, and time traveled. GPS receivers often are used in military operations, automotive navigation systems, and other tracking devices.
