Wireless connectivity is making exciting inroads into the home. Digital camcorders and set-top boxes linking wirelessly to television sets; digital cameras connecting wirelessly to PCs; MP3 players downloading music wirelessly and playing it in any room in the house. All of these consumer applications require a cost-effective wireless technology that offers wire-like performance-the ability to transfer at extremely high data rates-without interfering with other wireless services. Ultra-Wideband is the answer. Ultra-Wideband (UWB), an impulse-based or carrierless radio technology, operates across a wide band of frequencies by transmitting a series of extremely narrow and low-power pulses. Conventional radio systems, by contrast, operate in a relatively narrow bandwidth. The combination of broader spectrum, lower power and pulsed data means that UWB causes less interference than conventional narrowband radio solutions. At the same time, UWB can achieve the high data rates needed for these applications: over 110 Mbps. This combination of features makes UWB an ideal, cost-effective solution for consumer electronics and handheld devices. Freescale offers the only available chipset, so our consumer electronic partners can begin developing inmarket solutions today.

Solution

Freescales UWB solution is focused on short distance wireless applications, connecting multimedia and handheld devices such as cable/satellite set-top boxes, DVDs, digital cameras, camcorders, media players, TVs, displays (LCD, DLP, etc.) and PCs over distances under 10 meters.

Freescales UWB solution provides full wireless connectivity implementing Direct Sequence Ultra-Wideband (DS-UWB) and the IEEE 802.15.3 MAC protocol. The chipset delivers over 110 Mbps data transfer rate supporting applications such as streaming video, streaming audio, and high-rate data transfer at very low levels of power consumption.

In addition to high data rates, Freescales UWB solution supports peer-to-peer as well as ad hoc networking for truly mobile wireless connectivity. This chipset is the ultimate wireless solution when high data rate, low power and low cost are mandatory.
