BCM7043 HD/SD AVC/MPEG Video/Audio Encoder and Transcoder/Transcaler/Transrater The BCM7043 is a real-time high definition H.264/AVC, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4SP encoder and transcoder that is designed for use in cable, satellite, IP and terrestrial set-top boxes, home media centers, personal digital video recorders and HD DVD, Blu-ray, and DVD player/recorders. The BCM7043 is able to perform real-time high definition H.264/AVC and MPEG-2 encoding from the BCM7043’s HDMI input (HD and SD) or ITU-R BT.656 input (SD). Additionally, the BCM7043 is capable of transcoding up to four SD streams simultaneously and one stream at up to six times the real-time rate. Video Compression (Encoder) Engine Uncompressed video input is delivered to the encoder via ITU-R BT.656, HDMI, or host bus interfaces. The BCM7043’s video compression engine converts a sequence of uncompressed video pictures into H.264/AVC (ISO/IEC 14496-10), MPEG-2 (ISO/IEC 13818-2), or MPvbEG-4 Simple Profile compressed streams. Advanced Video Decoder The Advanced Video Decoder (AVD) module is a high-definition AVC/ MPEG-2/VC-1/DivX/MPEG-4 SP video decoder core. Transport Layer The transport layer of the BCM7043 manages audio/video synchronization for transport stream and program stream input and output. It accepts data from both stream and stored sources. On input, transport layer streams are demultiplexed to extract elementary audio and video streams prior to decoding and on output, audio and video elementary streams are (re)multiplexed together to create program and transport streams. Advanced Audio Module The BCM7043 contains a programmable audio processor that supports real-time decode of MPEG-1, Layer-ll, Dolby Digital AC-3, AAC-HE, AAC-LC, Dolby Digital Plus Stereo and 5.1, DTS, DTS-HD, MP-3, PCM; and real-time encoding of MPEG-1, Layer-ll, Dolby Digital AC- 3, AAC-HE, AAC-LC, MP3, PCM audio formats. Video Input Processor The Video Input Processor (VIP) module conditions uncompressed video for encoding. It may receive uncompressed video from an ITU-R BT.656 or HDMI inputs, or it may read uncompressed video from SDRAM. The BCM7043 produces excellent quality video and compression efficiency by incorporating an advanced video preprocessor that performs Motion Compensated Temporal Filtering (MCTF) and digital noise reduction and contains a motion adaptive de-interlacer and a variable geometry scaler.
