Background information

Adding a VoIP stack to the baseband means that a cordless phone can use the Internet to place domestic and international calls. This provides a significant cost savings for consumers, since calls are a fraction of normal prices or even free. Migrating a cordless phone to the IP format also enables other desirable features, such as browsing, instant messaging, and even gaming. Consumers can also use VoIP-enabled handsets to download new ringtones or color images for their phone’s display.

The baseband PCD8072x uses a high-end ARM7 and DSP technology. The baseband runs a complete VoIP stack and efficiently integrates the codecs as part of the firmware. The VoIP functionality builds on the familiar cordless architecture, so it’s easy for digital cordless manufacturers to construct a complete VoIP system. The architecture has also been optimized for very low power consumption, so the basebands deliver extended talk and standby times.

The baseband’s processors are supported by program memories, interface circuits, two audio codecs, auxiliary A/D and D/A converters, a baseband RF modem, and data Flash memory for speech storage.

The baseband architecture includes up to 896 kB of Flash memory, 36 kB RAM, and an external memory interface for enhanced applications that require access to more memory. There is an optimized, six-line interface to the radio chipset and there are multiple interface, including GPIO, SPI, I2C, and UART, for peripheral connection.
The baseband’s software stack in this system includes unique STUN support to over come NAT and firewall constraints when placing VoIP calls. The stack also supports the SIP ID and the E.164 numbering plan.

An integrated programmable Burst Mode Processor (BMP) in the baseband supports easy differentiation and is fully tested for compatibility with DECT, US-DECT, WDCT, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. On-chip firmware includes DTAM, VR, SMS, codecs, and more. Each baseband is interchangeable for DECT and WDCT, so a single platform can be used worldwide. Also, since each baseband is based on the same Application Programming Interface and hardware footprints, the basebands can be used for easy design-in over a range of phone models.

Other options in the PCD80(7)2x family support advanced digital-cordless designs for DECT and ISM 2.4 GHz. The basebands are supported by various DECT/WDCT transceivers. Transceivers for analog cordless are also available.
